TRAVELIST TIP: The corals can be pretty sharp, I recommend wearing aqua boots or some sort of water shoe, also some snorkelling tours may include underwater photography, but if you’re in a shared tour, you might want to bring your own underwater camera to capture the magic beneath the surface.
๐ข FYI: If you don’t want to do a snorkelling tour, there are also a number of spots just off the beaches on Gili Trawangan where you can simply rent snorkel gear (flippers, masks and snorkels) and just head into the water yourself. But please be aware that you’ll have to safeguard your belongings somewhere and ensure you are a strong enough swimmer when out on your own.

4. Head up to the Gili Island Viewpoint

Reaching the viewpoint on Gili Trawangan is super straightforward. Head to the southern part of the island and follow the clearly marked signs that guide you up the hill. The path is easy to find, making it a breeze even for first-time visitors. See map here
๐ What to Expect
As you make your way up, expect to be surrounded by lush greenery. The viewpoint itself offers a pretty panorama โ youโll see the sparkling blue waters, the neighbouring islands, and a few boats drifting by. It’s not super high, but still quite pretty.
๐ขFYI: This is certainly not the most well-maintained area of the island. the bushes are that well kept and being surrounded by trees, they may have grown significantly higher and possibly instructed some of the view so keep your expectations appropriate ๐
โ๏ธ Best Time to Visit
For the best experience, plan your visit either early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Early risers will be rewarded with a stunning sunrise over Lombok, while evening visitors can savour a magnificent sunset casting golden hues across Bali and the surrounding seas.

I think the word hike is probably an over-estimation. The walk is relatively easy and beginner-friendly, taking around 15-20 minutes at a relaxed pace. Itโs perfect for those who want to enjoy a bit of exercise without too much exertion.
Whether you’re snapping photos, soaking in the panoramic views, or just enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, the Gili Trawangan viewpoint offers an unforgettable experience that captures the island’s natural beauty.
5. Rent a Bike and Cycle the Island
Exploring Gili Trawangan is a sustainable joy: no motorized vehicles are allowed on the island, making it a peaceful and environmentally friendly mode of transportation. There are numerous bike rental shops scattered around the island, so finding one is never an issue. Most accommodations on the island also have bike rentals or complimentary bikes to use.
๐ฒ Bicycle Rental Rates: The average cost for daily bicycle rental is approximately 50,000 IDR (4 USD), but prices may vary depending on the quality of the bike.
We also managed to find a few VERY RARE tandem bikes on the island, these are great for those travelling together where one doesn’t feel as confident cycling on a bike themselves.
TRAVELIST TIP: Do a quick test of the bike before the rental and be sure you have the correct lock combination before you leave or at least the phone number of your vendor if you’ve forgotten.
6. Daytime Restaurant and Cafรฉ Hopping
Gili T boasts an array of culinary delights in the form of restaurants and cafes. Whether you’re looking for traditional Indonesian cuisine or international fare, the island has something to satisfy every palate. Most of the popular restaurants are located on the East side of the island.
Beachside Dining is a must! Many of the best places to eat in Gili Trawangan offer beachfront seating, allowing you to enjoy a delicious meal with stunning ocean views.
After a day of sightseeing and adventure, there’s no better way to unwind than indulging in some delicious food and drinks while watching the sunset.

Most of the nightlife spots are conveniently located along the eastern coast, near the main strip.
For an energetic start to your night, head to Sama Sama Reggae Bar, where live reggae bands set a laid-back, feel-good vibe perfect for those who love music and dancing. It definitely encompasses the Gili T Party vibe.
Mad Monkey Hostel is set right on the beach and hosts an infinity pool with plenty of foam – this definitely spells a good night (or day) out!
If youโre searching for a more relaxed atmosphere, Pearl Beach Lounge offers beachfront seating with sophisticated cocktails and a chill ambience ideal for couples and groups wanting to unwind.
Another great spot is Evolution Bar, known for its friendly staff and fun beach games, making it a hit with travellers of all ages.
Tir Na Nog exudes Irish pub fun vibes! Hosting local DJs and awesome drink specials its a great one to add to the list – they even host silent discos during the month of Ramadan.
Whether you prefer dancing until dawn or enjoying a quiet drink by the sea, the Gili Trawangan nightlife has something for everyone.
9. Gili Trawangan Night Market
Located in the heart of the island near the harbour, the Gili Trawangan Night Market is a bustling hub of local culture and culinary delights.
As the sun sets, the market comes alive with the sizzle of street food stalls and the chatter of excited visitors. Expect a sensory feast with an array of tantalizing aromas and vibrant sights.
Some must-try dishes include nasi goreng (fried rice), satay (grilled meat skewers served with peanut sauce), and ikan bakar (grilled fish), all prepared with an authentic Indonesian flair.
Donโt miss out on sweet treats like pisang goreng (fried banana) for dessert.
What makes this Gili T night market truly special is that itโs entirely locally run, offering a unique opportunity to support the local community and economy while enjoying some of the best food on the island.
Itโs not just about eating โ itโs about immersing yourself in the local culture, meeting friendly vendors, and experiencing the true spirit of Gili Trawangan in a lively, communal setting.
TRAVELIST TIP: Arrive early to grab a seat and sample a variety of stalls. This place definitely gets pretty busy. Also, much of the food here is significantly cheaper than dining at the restaurants.
10. Catching an Epic Sunset in Gili Trawangan
One of the most magical experiences on Gili Trawangan is watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink.
For an unforgettable sunset, head to the western side of the island. The iconic Gili T swings, located near Ombak Sunset Resort, offer a picture-perfect spot to enjoy the view and snap some memorable photos.
If you prefer a more relaxed setting, Sunset Beach is a fantastic choice, where you can sink your toes into the sand and watch the day transition into the night.
Another great option is The Exile, a laid-back beach club located at the southern end of the island, known for its chill vibes, comfy bean bags, and refreshing cocktails.
One of my favourite spots however was the Pinkcoco Beach Club, the pink, the bean bags, the DJs – such a chilled vibe
TRAVELIST TIP: To ensure you snag the best spot, aim to arrive around 5:30 PM, as the sun typically sets between 6:00 and 6:30 PM. Also bring along a light jacket or shawl โ while the evenings are generally warm, the ocean breeze can sometimes get a bit chilly as the sun goes down.
Whether youโre lounging with friends, enjoying a romantic moment, or simply soaking in the beauty alone, Gili Trawanganโs sunsets are a must-see experience.
11. Capturing the Perfect Gili Trawangan Swing Photo
For that epic and Instagram-worthy swing photo that everyone raves about, head to the iconic Gili T swings located near Ombak Sunset Resort on the western side of the island.
These swings are perfectly positioned against the backdrop of stunning sunsets, making them ideal for capturing breathtaking shots.
๐ข FYI: What I noticed is that these swings (Except Ombak Sunset) are not very well maintained. They are often seen broken or hanging and its understandable why, because they are based in the ocean. Hopefully when you visit you’ll find at least one good swing to get a shot on
TRAVELIST TIP: To get the best lighting and avoid the crowds, aim to arrive around 5:00 PM. This gives you plenty of time to find a good spot and frame your shot before the sun begins its descent.
Be prepared to wait a bit, as this is a popular spot, but trust me, the results are worth the patience. Don’t forget to experiment with different angles and poses to make your pictures stand out!

12. Island Hopping between Gili Air and Gili Meno
Island hopping from Gili Trawangan to its neighbouring islands, Gili Meno and Gili Air, is an adventure you won’t want to miss. These islands each offer unique vibes and experiences, making for delightful day trips.

This is the smallest and least developed of the three and exudes a serene and romantic atmosphere perfect for honeymooners or anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle. Expect pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a chance to visit the famous BASK underwater statues at the Meno Wall, a must-see for snorkelers and divers.
I also found that snorkelling at Gili Meno is probably where I saw the most turtles. They also have a turtle hatchling sanctuary where you can learn about the conservation of the turtles of the Gili islands.

In contrast, Gili Air combines the tranquillity of Meno with a bit more liveliness, featuring charming beachfront cafes, yoga retreats, and vibrant coral reefs just offshore. Itโs ideal for those seeking a relaxed yet slightly more sociable vibe.
Highlights on Gili Air include snorkelling with turtles and enjoying a fresh coconut at one of the island’s laid-back beach bars.
Hopping between these islands is incredibly easy, with regular boat services running throughout the day. The journey takes about 15 minutes, offering stunning views of the turquoise sea and surrounding landscapes.
TRAVELIST TIP: Start early to make the most of your island-hopping adventure and savour every moment of this tropical paradise.
13. Getting Pampered at a Spa on Gili Trawangan
Imagine sinking into blissful relaxation as the gentle sounds of the ocean surround you โ that’s what getting pampered at a spa on Gili Trawangan feels like. There are several well-known and reputable spas that offer an array of treatments to rejuvenate your mind and body.
You Spa, for instance, is a favourite among visitors, renowned for its calming ambience and professional therapists. They offer signature treatments like traditional Balinese massages and aromatic body scrubs that leave your skin glowing.

Rose Spa is also worth mentioning for its amazing manicures! These guys definitely know what they are doing. Apart from the manicures, they also do the full range of spa treatments including massages, waxing etc.
Depending on where you’re staying your hotel may also have a spa if you’re looking for something a bit closer to home. This was definitely one of my favourite things to do in Gili T.
