Why Choose a Nusa Penida Tour?

1. Tours are fuss and hassle-free, therefore you don’t have to plan or arrange anything yourself

2. The terrain of Nusa Penida is very different to Bali, It is extremely hilly and severely congested, therefore having a well-experienced driver who knows where they’re going and how to navigate is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I’ve seen a number of tourists struggle on motorcycles and scooters trying to get to these locations themselves.

3. You’ll have a personal guide for the locations who can also help you take photos

4. You’re supporting the local economy, tours are outsourced to local companies and it’s good to do your bit and support local services.

1. Kelingking Beach: Nusa Penida’s most famous beach

Things to do in Nusa Penida Kelingking Beach

Kelingking Beach is a sight to behold – a secluded, white sand beach surrounded by turquoise waters and towering limestone cliffs. The viewpoint from above is iconic, resembling a T-Rex’s head, and provides an awe-inspiring photo opportunity. It’s definitely top of the things to do on Nusa Penida list!

TRAVELIST TIP: For the best views at Kelingking Beach, arrive early in the morning before the tourist crowds descend. The view is especially spectacular during sunrise!

If you’re feeling adventurous (and have the time, descend the rickety stairs down to the beach and soak in the sublime tranquillity. You can also explore some of the hidden coves and inlets around the beach – just be sure to wear proper footwear as these trails are often rocky or slippery.

2. Angel’s Billabong: Nusa Penida’s Natural Infinity Pool in the Ocean

Things to do in Nusa Penida, Angel's Billabong Nusa Penida West

Angel’s Billabong is a naturally formed infinity pool where you can take a refreshing dip while overlooking the vast ocean.

Visit during low tide for the most serene experience. You can also spot some of the native marine life, such as tropical fish and sea turtles.

TRAVELIST TIP: Some people have been known to venture into the pool – DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! The tide rises quickly and it can be dangerous, I don’t recommend getting in and in recent years it’s been prohibited -so safety first.

3. Broken Beach: A Natural Lagoon Surrounded by Cliffs

Things to do in Nusa Penida Broken BEach Nusa Penida West

Imagine a horseshoe-shaped cove, encased by towering cliffs, and adorned with a stunning rock arch that reaches out to the sea. This is one of my favourite places to visit and high on my nusa penida to-do list!

This is Broken Beach, a coastal formation so unique and breathtaking that it feels like stepping into a postcard. The azure waters of the Indian Ocean crash against the jagged rocks, creating a symphony of sounds that echo throughout the cove – a testament to nature’s raw power and beauty.

Things to do in Nusa Penida Broken Beach Nusa Penida West

So how did Broken Beach earn its name? It’s all down to the massive rock arch, the star landmark of this spot. Over time, the relentless pounding of the waves eroded the cliff, carving out this incredible archway. From a distance, it appears as though a chunk of the cliff has been ‘broken’ away, hence the name Broken Beach or “Pasih Uug” in Balinese, which literally translates to ‘damaged beach’.

TRAVELIST TIP: Walking over the natural rock archway is a thrilling experience. However, keep in mind that the drop into the ocean below is significant, so be cautious and respect the safety guidelines.

4. Crystal Bay Beach: A Serene Escape

Things to do in Nusa Penida Crystal Bay Beach

Nestled on the western side of the island, this secluded haven is a serene escape. The moment you arrive, you’re greeted by the sight of palm trees swaying gently in the breeze.

The sand beneath your feet is warm and inviting, while the iridescent blue waters of the bay beckon you into their cool embrace.

While snorkelling is often one of the go-to Nusa Penida activities here, there’s so much more to do at Crystal Bay Nusa Penida. You can take a leisurely stroll along the beach, soaking up the sun and revelling in tranquillity. Or perhaps you’d enjoy a boat tour around the bay, giving you a different perspective of this beautiful spot. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot the elusive Mola-Mola sunfish!

TRAVELIST TIP: come early or stay late to avoid the midday heat. Not only will this make your visit more comfortable, but you’ll also get to witness the mesmerizing sunrise or sunset – trust me, it’s a sight you don’t want to miss!

5. Snorkeling in Nusa Penida: The Ultimate Underwater Adventure

6. Banah Cliff: A Stunning Viewpoint of the Underrated Atuh Beach

This eastern-facing lookout offers some of the most spectacular views on Nusa Penida Island. The beauty of Banah Cliff Point lies in its raw, unfiltered charm.

TRAVELIST TIP: When to visit – While the viewpoint is a sight to behold at any time of the day, it truly comes alive during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. As the first rays of the morning sun illuminate the sea and the beach below, the view from Banah Cliff is nothing short of magical. And as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange, pink, and purple, the silhouette of Atuh Beach against the vibrant backdrop makes for a stunning spectacle.

The rugged cliff sides, the endless expanse of the ocean, and the distant horizon merging with the sky create a panorama that’s nothing short of a masterpiece.

But what sets Banah Cliff apart from other viewpoints is its unique perspective of the underrated Atuh Beach. From Banah Cliff, you can capture the grandeur of Atuh Beach in all its glory. The beach, surrounded by towering green cliffs and various limestone rock formations, presents a picturesque scene that feels almost surreal.

7. Tembeling Beach and Natural Pool: Hidden Beaches and a Tranquil Pool

Tembeling Beach and Natural Pool is a hidden paradise featuring two secluded beaches and a tranquil natural pool nestled within a forest.

As you step onto the pristine sand of Tembeling Beach, you’ll be greeted by the soothing sound of waves gently lapping against the shore.

Just a short walk from the beach, you’ll discover the Natural Pool, a hidden gem tucked away amidst the dense foliage. This enchanting pool, fed by a freshwater spring, is the perfect place to take a relaxing dip and escape the tropical heat.

As you submerge yourself in the cool water, look out for the small freshwater shrimps that call this pool home. These friendly creatures are known to nibble gently on your skin, providing an unexpected yet delightful sensation.

TRAVELIST TIP: 1) Finding the Location: Finding this spot can be a bit of a challenge, but that’s part of the adventure. Follow the pathway that leads from the beach into the jungle, keeping an eye out for the small signposts that guide the way to the Natural Pool. 2) Appropriate Footwear: Be sure to bring sturdy walking shoes, as the pathway can be uneven and somewhat slippery. 3) Mosquito Heaven: While the tranquil atmosphere of Tembeling Beach and the Natural Pool makes it a haven for relaxation, it’s also a habitat for mosquitoes. So, don’t forget to pack some insect repellent to keep these pesky insects at bay.

Best time to visit Tembeling Beach? The best time to visit is during low tide when the beach is at its most beautiful and the natural pool is most accessible. Also, since there are no food stalls or cafes nearby, consider bringing a picnic to enjoy amidst the stunning scenery.

8. Peguyangan Waterfall with Iconic Blue Steps

Unlike traditional waterfalls, Peguyangan Waterfall isn’t about cascading heights; it’s a series of small falls and natural pools at the bottom of a cliff, offering an experience that’s as refreshing as it is visually stunning. The waterfall is located on the southwestern coast of Nusa Penida, around 45-60 minutes drive from Toya Pakeh harbour.

Reaching the waterfall itself is part of the adventure. A descent down the iconic blue stairs carved onto the cliffside leads you to this hidden gem. It’s a steep trek, but the breathtaking ocean views make every step worth it. – Just remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water!

Once there, you can take a dip in the sacred pools, enjoy the soothing sound of the water hitting the rocks, or simply soak up the spectacular coastal views. Nearby, you’ll find a temple where locals often conduct ceremonies, adding a spiritual dimension to this idyllic spot.

TRAVELIST TIP: Make sure to visit early in the day to avoid the crowds and get the most of the tranquil ambience. Also, don’t forget your camera – the views are truly Instagram-worthy!

A trip to Nusa Penida wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the unique charm of Peguyangan Waterfall. It’s more than just a place to visit; it’s a place to connect with nature and immerse yourself in the local culture. So, when you’re planning your Nusa Penida itinerary, make sure this awe-inspiring waterfall is on your list.

9. Atuh Beach: The Epic Rock Arch

Atuh Beach Nusa Penida Atuh BEach rock arch Things to do in Nusa PEnida

This beach is a serene paradise with clear turquoise waters and a dramatic cliff backdrop. It’s perfect for a relaxing day of sunbathing and swimming.

TRAVELIST TIP: The beach is accessible via a steep staircase, so wear comfortable shoes!

One of the standout features of Atuh Beach, Nusa Penida is its majestic rock arch formation. Known as Batu Melawang or Melawang Cliff, this natural wonder stands tall against the backdrop of the sparkling turquoise sea, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

The arch, carved out by centuries of ocean waves, serves as a grand entrance to the beach, inviting visitors to explore the splendours within.

Walking under the imposing arch, you can’t help but feel a sense of awe and reverence for the raw power of nature. And as the sunlight filters through the opening, casting dancing shadows on the soft white sand, it creates a magical play of light and shadow that’s nothing short of mesmerizing.

TRAVELIST TIP: For my insider tip consider visiting Atuh Beach at low tide. This is when the rock pools around the arch become visible, revealing a fascinating underwater world teeming with marine life. It’s a sight that many tourists miss, but it’s one that adds a whole new dimension to your Atuh Beach experience.

10. Rumah Pohon Treehouse: A Dreamy Escape in the Heart of Nusa Penida

Rumah Pohon Treehouse Nusa Penida East Things to do in Nusa Penida island

Perched high on the cliffs of Nusa Penida, the Rumah Pohon Treehouse is a bucket-list-worthy destination that promises an experience like no other. The view that awaits you here is truly breathtaking – panoramic vistas of the azure ocean, punctuated by dramatic cliffs and lush greenery. It’s a picture-perfect scene that begs to be captured and shared with the world.

From this vantage point, you can also see several iconic spots such as the Thousand Islands viewpoint and Atuh Beach. But what sets Rumah Pohon Treehouse apart is the chance to stay overnight. Yes – you heard me correctly!

Imagine falling asleep to the sound of waves crashing against the shore and waking up to a stunning sunrise over the ocean. The treehouse is basic but comfortable, with amenities like a bed, a balcony, and a shared bathroom.

Booking a stay at the treehouse is simple. You can reserve your spot through various online platforms like Agoda. But remember, due to its popularity, it’s advised to book well in advance.

TRAVELIST TIP: pack light! The climb to the treehouse is quite steep, so carrying heavy luggage can be a challenge. Trust me, the less you carry, the more you’ll enjoy this enchanting escape.

The Rumah Pohon Treehouse might not be my choice for a night’s stay, but the viewpoint is an unforgettable experience.

11. Diamond Beach Viewpoint: A Gem on the Eastern Coast of Nusa Penida

Diamond Beach Things to do in Nusa Penida East
Diamond Beach Things to do in Nusa Penida East

Tucked away on the eastern coast of Nusa Penida, the Diamond Beach Nusa Penida Viewpoint is an untouched paradise that’s sure to take your breath away. The journey to this viewpoint is an adventure in itself.

As you wind your way down the carved staircase etched into the cliffside, you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of the turquoise sea, white sandy beaches, and towering cliffs.

The shimmering blue waters lapped gently against the diamond-shaped rocks jutting out of the sea, from which the beach gets its name.

The rhythmic sound of the waves crashing against the rocks provided a soothing soundtrack to the mesmerizing view. On a clear day, you can even see the outline of the neighbouring islands in the distance.

Best Time to visit Diamond Beach? The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the beach is less crowded. The soft morning light illuminates the landscape, casting a magical glow over the scene. In the late afternoon, the setting sun bathes the beach in a warm, golden hue, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere.

TRAVELIST TIP: Wear sturdy shoes as the staircase can be quite slippery.

12. Thousand Islands Viewpoint: Witness a landscape like no other

As the name suggests, this spot offers a breathtaking panoramic vista of the vast ocean dotted with numerous small islands, it’s actually pretty much right next to Rumah Pohon Treehouse.

Getting there was fairly straightforward. The roads leading up to the viewpoint can be a bit challenging with steep inclines and sharp turns, but the stunning views waiting at the end are absolutely worth it. I don’t suggest renting a scooter – this is a difficult drive for even skilled riders, hiring a private driver or doing it as part of a tour is another convenient option.

Best time to visit? I recommend visiting the viewpoint early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Not only does this help avoid the midday crowds, but the soft lighting during these hours also makes for some incredible photographs.

TRAVELIST TIP: Secret Location- Just a short walk from the main viewpoint, there’s a lesser-known spot that offers an equally stunning view. It’s a bit hidden and not many tourists know about it, so you might have this magical place all to yourself! So, when you’re planning your trip to Nusa Penida, make sure to add the Thousand Island viewpoint to your itinerary. Trust me, it’s an experience you wouldn’t want to miss!

13. Suwehan Beach

This secluded white sand beach is surrounded by towering cliffs, adding to its allure and sense of seclusion.

The journey to Suwehan Beach is an adventure in itself, with winding roads leading through the island’s lush scenery. But trust me, the breathtaking view that greets you upon arrival is worth every second of the journey.

Spend your time swimming in the clear waters, sunbathing on the pristine sand, or exploring the nearby cliffs at Suwehan Beach. If you’re lucky, you might even have this paradise all to yourself, as it’s one of the lesser-visited beaches on Nusa Penida.

So, if you’re planning your itinerary for things to do in Nusa Penida, make sure to include a stop at Suwehan Beach. This slice of paradise truly encapsulates the untouched beauty of the island and is sure to be one of the highlights of your trip

14. Teletubbies Hill: A Surreal Landscape Straight Out of a Storybook

If you’re planning a trip to Nusa Penida, make sure to set aside some time for Teletubbies Hill, a whimsical destination that will transport you straight into the heart of a beloved childhood TV show.

Its unusual name stems from its resemblance to the iconic rolling hills seen in the “Teletubbies” series. The landscape is a sight to behold, with verdant green hills undulating against the backdrop of a clear blue sky.

For those who love to explore on foot, there are walking paths that meander through the hills. Don’t worry, the terrain is relatively easy to navigate, making it suitable for all fitness levels. As you walk, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. It feels like stepping into a real-life storybook.

16. Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave Temple: Unearthing the Spiritual Heart of Nusa Penida

Tucked away on the northeastern tip of Nusa Penida, the Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave Temple is a hidden spiritual oasis. This sacred haven is nestled inside the island’s largest cave.

As you approach, a flight of steep stairs beckons you towards the entrance – a small crevice in the rock face. Crawling through it, I was greeted by a cavernous temple that echoed with tranquillity. The cool, damp air inside contrasted starkly with the tropical heat outside, and the soft hum of prayers further enhanced the mystical ambience.

Temple Etiquette: Visitors should be aware of certain etiquettes when visiting this sacred space.

  1. Modest dressing is a must, and sarongs are available at the entrance for those who need one
  2. Shoes should be removed before entering the temple, and
  3. While photography is allowed, it’s essential to be respectful and avoid disturbing the devotees.

The temple is open every day, and there is a small donation fee upon entry, which goes towards the temple’s upkeep.

Best time to visit? I found the early morning to be the best time to visit, as the temple was less crowded and the soft rays of dawn added a magical touch to the whole experience.

TRAVELIST TIP: 1) The entryway is very small, so it’s not great for those who suffer from claustrophobia 2) Don’t rush your visit. Take time to soak in the peaceful atmosphere, participate in the ceremonies if possible, and connect with the friendly locals. They have fascinating stories to share about the temple’s history and significance.

One of the must-visit spots on your Nusa Penida itinerary should be the famed Palm Tree Road, a scenic stretch that leads to Crystal Bay. This iconic road is flanked by towering palm trees that create an enchanting tunnel of greenery.

It’s a sight that’s as mesmerizing as it is photogenic, making it a favourite among photographers and Instagram enthusiasts alike.

Exploring Palm Tree Road is an adventure in itself. You’ll see plenty of photos and Instagram shots of those on motorcycles or scooters in this coveted shot, I don’t think it’s 100% necessary. you can equally hire a driver to traverse this picturesque path.

As I embarked on the trail, I was immediately struck by the rugged beauty of the landscape. The path, carved into the side of the cliff, is steep and a little bit treacherous, but the views of the crashing waves against the rocky shoreline below were nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Reaching the waterfall was a victory in itself. The sight of the cascading water against the backdrop of the vast ocean is incredible. The cool mist on my face, the roar of the falls, and smell the fresh scent of the surrounding vegetation, its sensory wonderland.
